HER POEM-JOHN HAWKES

Michel

Andre, I will share three games of love
With you and Philippe. You may have your
Choises, which you must defend.
I shall be satisfied with what remains,
Then prove it superior to yours.

Three lovers love equally a lady.
When all three are in her company
She plays her games.
To one she looks with loving eye;
The hand of the next she squeezes;
As fort the last, beneath the table
She presses her foot to his, speaking
With the three of them agreeably.

Now, Andre, by which of her games
Does one of her lovers
Know himself to be the lady’s love?

Andre

Michel, I do not hesitate.
The lady’s friend on whom her eyes delights
is the one she love.
The look of the love comes from the heart
And cannot be shown forth but by the eye.

Holding hands is sweet
But without signficance,
While the lady who presses he foot
To her lover’s foot beneath the table
is teasing.
Let me be looked at lovingly
by my lady.

Philippe

I am well satisfied by your choise, Andre,
Since you leave me foot and hand
And hand I wanted most of all
before you spoke.
If the lady’s eye looks at one lover
it looks at a crowd
No one believes a lady’s glance,
despite the look in her eye.
As for the foot, a nudging foot
Nudgest the nearest and in mere play,
hence is no sign of love.
But the hand! The pressure of the
Ungloved hand tells all,
For its touch is deliberate
and both are bare.
I would know my lady’s love
By her gentle hand.

Michel

My thanks to you, gracious Philippe,
For it was the foot I wanted.
The eye speaks not of love
But conquers friends fort he lady,
and everyone has held her hand.
But foot to foot in secrecy,
shared privately,
denying the knowledge of what
everyone would know,
and preventing the amusement
it would provide:
there is love!

Andre

Our lady has looked into my eyes
With love!

Philippe

She has held my hand!

Michel

She has touched her little foot to mine
beneath the table!

The Lady

Trust neither eye nor foot nor hand.
I love a forth,
who each day receives my letter.

ONUN ŞİİRİ

Michel

Ben bir dördüncüyü seviyorum;
ki, o, alır hergün mektubumu.
